Organic Dairy and Crops Field Day

Hosted by MOSES
Location: Rosendale, WI
Long-time organic dairy farmers Dan and Darlene Coehoorn will host an organic dairy and crops field day, Friday, July 30 from 1- 4:30 PM at their farm just south of Rosendale WI. This free event is sponsored by the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES). The Coehoorns will discuss how they produce high quality organic milk through proper feed crop and pasture management for their cows. “Rotational grazing is a good way for us to maximize the productivity of our pastures and provide high quality forage for our cattle,” says Dan Coehoorn. During the field and pasture tour, attendees will also learn how the Coehoorns use cover crops and crop rotations for soil fertility and weed control. New organic regulations require organic cows to consume a minimum 30% of their dry matter intake from pasture during the grazing season. There will be a short presentation on how to calculate dry matter demand and intake from grazing for the various ages of ruminants on the farm, in order to meet the new federal organic regulations related to pasturing. Tom Weaver of KOW Consulting will conduct a question and answer session on how soil fertility is tied to animal health. Grazing specialists from the local Resource Conservation and Development office and Extension office will be present to answer questions. Producers can learn how to access Natural Resources Conservation Service cost share programs to help implement practices that support organic agriculture. Based in Spring Valley, WI, MOSES works with farmers, farming organizations, and government agencies to organize its organic farm field days. Sessions are free and open to all farmers, agriculture professionals, and those interested in organic and sustainable farming practices. Free resources on organic production will be available to all attendees and refreshments will be served. To pre-register and for directions to the Coehoorn Farm, call or email the MOSES office at 715-778-5775 or info@mosesorganic.org.
