The Midwest Renewable Energy Association promotes renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable living through education and demonstration.

Green Features

At the MREA we believe in "walking our talk." Every purchase and action at the MREA is evaluated for its sustainability, and we do our best to model sustainable best practices. We recognize, however, that there are many shades of green, and we view the Institute as a work in progress.

Here are some of the features that you will see when you visit the Institute:

award winning landscaping designed to conserve water and maximize animal habitat,

water conserving features like dual flush toilets, low flow shower heads, and a composting toilet.

energy efficient appliances and lighting, including solar tubes and a clerestory.

alternative construction methods including timberframing, strawbale, and rammed earth tire.

remodeling options including concrete countertops, recylced paper counter tops, homosote wall board, and much more.
